IMITATE
MORE POWERFUL
FROM INNOVATE
That's at least according to Tony Fernandes, the legendary CEO who two days ago annexed Gojek's operations in Thailand through his new business line AirAsia Digital.
As is known, when the global aviation industry collapsed due to the pandemic, AirAsia carried out AGILE LEAP by launching AirAsia Digital with the ambition of creating super apps like what Gojek has successfully done in Indonesia.
For Tony, IMITATION is more powerful than INNOVATION. Imitation is MORE POWERFUL than innovation.
Unabashedly he said: "I want to imitate Gojek." Tony is also not ashamed to say that there are a number of things that Airasia has learned from Gojek to become the leading super app in Southeast Asia.
"This acquisition is about how I learned from Gojek in building its business operations in Thailand, which was drawn from their success in Indonesia and Singapore," he said.
This is not the first time Tony has done imitating other companies. Previously he was a record company executive, then PIVOT founded a very innovative airline, namely AirAsia.
As Tony admits, he imitated the business model of the world's pioneering low-cost airlines when he gave birth to AirAsia.
"The pioneers of low-cost airlines were Southwest, RyanAir, EasyJet, and I imitated their model," he said.
IMITATION is more powerful than INNOVATION for at least 3 reasons:
#1. LOWER RISK
INNOVATION has a high risk because it is a pioneering step that has no form n pattern. IMITATION is less risky because it only replicates and modifies the innovation.
#2. HIGHER CERTAINTY
From the market side, IMITATOR has more certainty because the market has been formed and the INOVATOR pioneered it. Imitators only develop it further.
#3. MORE CREATIVITY
Innovators focus on one thing, namely creating an entirely new market. Once a new market is created, IMITATOR can be very broad in creating, exploring, and experimenting to develop it.
Welcome TRIPLE DISRUPTION...
Be LEAN
Be AGILE
Be CREATIVE
